Spring Nintendo Night

Last Friday, 27 teens came out for our spring edition of Nintendo Night!  It was a great group, and the event ran so smoothly that we had extra time.  That's very unusual!  We did our usual Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament, which had 24 entrants in teams of two.  We ended up with a three-team final:  David J/Siaka, David T./Jared, and John/Conor.  John and Conor beat both other teams to each earn a $15 gift card to Game Stop and candy.  The other guys just got candy. We also had a Pokemon Black and White tournament, which had eight entrants.  Someone dropped out, and they ended up in this crazy three-person loop for the finals.  Finally, Evan managed to beat both David J. and John!  All three of them got candy, but only Evan got the $10 Game Stop gift card.  At the end of the event, I gave away a bunch of random Nintendo prizes, so a lot of people left with something!

Huge thanks to our regular gaming club members for their help with the event.  David J. brought in his Wii and controllers for Naruto free play, Evan planned and ran the Pokemon tournament, Colin provided his vintage N64 and games, Tim donated some N64 prizes, and John kept the controllers under control.  We couldn't have done it without you!

Just Dance

Last Wednesday, 15 people showed up for our after-school Just Dance day.  We had fun warming up with some free play, then started the tournament.  Although Devon brought in Just Dance 3 and was sure that he'd win, he didn't even make it to the final round!  We ended up with a three-person final among Brittney, Kathy, and Shanae.  Shanae won by just a few points and got a $10 Wawa gift card!

If you owe the library money for overdue fines, be sure to come out on June 20 from 1:00 to 5:00 for Rock Away Your Fines!  For every one song you play on Rock Band, I will knock a dollar off of your fines.  Check with the library for more details.

Winter Nintendo Night

Last Friday, 29 teens showed up for our winter Nintendo Night.  This was a relatively small group for this program, so things were a bit more relaxed than usual!  The Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament had 27 entrants and I made a full bracket of 32 by randomly selecting those who lost to re-enter the tournament.  The final ended up being Colin and James vs. David J. and John E.  David and John won, each receiving a $20 gift card to Game Stop.  They are not allowed to team together next time!  The other six guys in the semi-final round (Siaka, Le, Munir, Colton, Colin, and James) received candy.

In the Naruto Shippuden III tournament, 12 people competed down to a three-way final.  We played that final round-robin style, and Alex P. was the winner of the $10 Wawa gift card after two games.  David T. beat out Dennis W. for the second-place prize, a $5 Wawa gift card.  Dennis W. got candy for being a finalist.  (The Wawa cards were purchased with donations from our recent gift card fundraiser!)  Both tournaments ended a little early, leaving time for free play on both games.  People also enjoyed DS games, Pokemon Stadium on the N64, and sodas during the evening.  And yes, the Yu-Gi-Oh cards were allowed, even though they're not from Nintendo!

Thanks to John E. for keeping the controllers under control, to David J. for bringing his Wii and games, and to Maria for digging up her N64.  This program would not have run as smoothly without your help!  Look for another Nintendo Night program on the spring schedule, which will include a DS Pokemon tournament.  Also, don't forget about Mario Night on Friday, March 9.

Fall Nintendo Night

Last Friday, 39 teens showed up for our fall edition of Nintendo Night!  It was our busiest one ever, with three simultaneous tournaments.  We had full brackets in the Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament, with 18 teams.  I matched them up randomly, and we ended up with a final match of David J. and Colin vs. Devon and Jared.  Jared put up a good fight at the end, but was ultimately beaten.  It was a great match!  David J. and Colin each got a $15 gift card to Game Stop, and all four guys got candy.  Huge thanks to John E. for keeping the controllers straightened out for each match.  It was a big help!

The Naruto Shippuden III tournament was also full, with 16 entrants.  This has been a popular game at our club meetings, so it was not a surprise to see some exciting matches and hear a lot of bragging!  Dennis M. defeated David T. in the final for a $10 gift card to Game Stop.  All of the top four finishers received candy.

For our third tournament, we did a Pokemon Black and White tournament on DS.  Evan didn't like our rules from last time, so he took a shot at running it his way.  It worked pretty well, and it also went really fast!  Ten people entered, which worked down to a three-way final.  David J. took home the $10 Game Stop gift card, and all three top finishers got candy.   Evan did all the work of this tournament, from making the rules to checking teams to recording victories in the brackets.  Thanks, Evan!

We do this several times a year, so look for another Nintendo Night on the winter 2012 schedule. 

Uno Tournament

Last Wednesday, 23 people showed up for our after-school Uno Tournament.  To make it more fun, everyone got to pick their group for the first rounds.  I mean, it's no fun if you can't compete with your friends, right?!  The first two winners from each table advanced to the semi-finals, and then the first two winners from the semi-finals advanced to the final round.  As people left the tournament, they could continue playing Uno or choose other board or card games.  (And, as usual, the Yu-Gi-Oh guys brought their own cards along.)  The final game was among Janae, Warren, Billy, and Zaynah. There had been much trash talking on Facebook, and Warren backed up his claims with victory!  He won candy and a $10 gift card to Wawa.  The other three finalists each got a card game, and everyone who played in the semi-finals got candy.  It was so much fun, we have to do it again sometime!
